Robert Edward Lee

 

Robert E. Lee fut le général en chef de l'armée confédérée. Né en 1807, il était le fils d'un héros de la révolution américaine. Sa famille appartenait à l'aristocratie de Virginie. Il perdit son père alors qu'il n'avait que 11 ans. Lee fut un très bon élève, notamment en mathématiques. En 1825, il fut admis à l'académie militaire de West Point. Il s'y montra très brillant et constitua un modèle pour ses camarades.

En 1861, quand la guerre de Sécession éclata, Robert E. Lee se montra attaché à la préservation de l'Union et de la constitution. Par ailleurs, il n'éprouvait aucune sympathie pour l'esclavage. Lincoln proposa donc à Lee de prendre le commandement des armées de l'Union. Il refusa par fidélité à sa Virginie natale.

Le général Lee devint le conseiller militaire du président confédéré Jefferson Davis puis prit le commandement des armées du Sud.

 

Robert Edward Lee was the commander of the confederate army. Born in 1807, he was the son of a revolutionnary heroe. His family belonged to the Virginia gentry. Lee lost his father when he was eleven year old. Lee was an excellent student, especially in mathematics. In 1825, he entered the military academy of West Point. Very brilliant, he was a exemple for the other cadets.

In 1861, when the war broke out, Robert E. Lee was very attached to the Union and the constitution. He expressed no sympathy for slavery. Lincoln offered him to become commander of the Union army. But he declined by fidelity to Virginia, his home state.

General Lee became military advisor to confederate president Jefferson Davis then took command of the army.

Ulysses Simpson Grant

 

Le général Grant fut le commandant suprême des armées de l'union dans les dernières années de la guerre de sécession.

Né en 1822 dans l'Ohio, Ulysses Simpson Grant était le fils d'un tanneur. A l'âge de dix-sept ans, il fut admis à l'académie militaire de West Point. Il n'y fut pas un élève brillant. Il quitta l'armée en 1854.

Son retour à la vie civile fut un échec. Quand la guerre éclata, il offrit ses services à l'armée de l'union. Son efficacité, sa ténacité et sa dureté lui valurent le surnom de Grant "l'homme des redditions sans condition".

En 1863, alors que Lincoln cherchait un nouveau chef pour les armées de l'Union, il prit conscience que Grant était l'homme de la situation.

 

General Grant was the commander of all the Union armies in the late years of the civil war.

Born in 1822 in Ohio, Ulysses Simpson Grant was the son of a tanner. At the age of seventeen, he entered the military academy of West Point. He graduated from the school but wasn’t particularly brilliant. He resigned from army in 1854.

His return to civilian life was unsuccesful. When the war broke out, he offered his services to the Union army. His efficiency, his tenacity and his toughness made him earn the nickname “Unconditionnel Surrender” Grant.

In 1863, when Lincoln wants a new commander of the Union armies, he decided Grant was the man for the job.
